Apparently I have been doing birthdays wrong for 41 years because I had no idea how many birthday freebies and discounts were waiting for me.
I turn 42 this week, and I went down a very deep rabbit hole figuring out how much free food, beauty products and shopping discounts you can get simply because it is your birthday.
The answer: A LOT. But there is a catch.
Most birthday rewards are not something you can walk in and claim just by showing your ID. You usually need to join the brand’s free loyalty program, enter your birthday in advance and, in some cases, make a purchase before your birthday. Some rewards last all month, while others disappear at the end of your actual birthday.
I checked the current 2026 rules directly on each brand’s website because many of the birthday-freebie lists online are outdated. Dunkin’ no longer gives everyone a free birthday drink, and Dairy Queen does not promise everyone a free Blizzard.
Here are the birthday freebies and discounts that are actually still available in 2026, plus exactly what you need to do to get them.
Quick answer: The best 2026 birthday rewards
If you only want to sign up for a few, these are the birthday perks that stood out to me most:
- Best free drink: Starbucks
- Best free food: Jersey Mike’s regular sub, Jimmy John’s regular Original sandwich, a Nothing Bundt Cakes Bundtlet or a Jeni’s birthday scoop
- Best beauty rewards: Sephora and Ulta Beauty
- Best shopping discount: Kendra Scott’s 50% off one fashion-jewelry item
- Best Chicago-area rewards: Portillo’s free chocolate cake slice and Lettuce Entertain You’s $15 to $20 dining reward
- Easiest month-long shopping perk: Target’s 5% birthday discount, valid for 30 days
Free birthday food and drinks
Starbucks: Free drink or food item
Green-level Starbucks Rewards members receive one free handcrafted beverage, food item or eligible bottled drink on their actual birthday. Gold members have seven days to use it, and Reserve members have 30 days.
The catch: You must join Starbucks Rewards at least seven days before your birthday, add your birthday to your account and make at least one Star-earning transaction before your birthday each year. Green members must use the reward on the actual day.

Chick-fil-A: Free dessert or a higher-tier reward
Regular Chick-fil-A One members can choose a Chocolate Chunk Cookie or Chocolate Fudge Brownie. Silver members get a larger dessert selection, Red members can choose an eligible sandwich or nuggets, and Signature members can choose an eligible entrée.
The catch: Join Chick-fil-A One, add your birthday to your profile and check the app for your reward. The exact options depend on your membership tier and can change.

Panera: Free bakery treat
MyPanera members receive a free individual bakery treat, such as an eligible bagel, cookie, brownie, muffin, scone or pastry.
The catch: Add your birthday to your MyPanera account. The reward is valid for seven days from the date it is loaded, must be selected when ordering and cannot be combined with another offer.

Jersey Mike’s: Free regular sub, wrap or sub bowl
Qualifying MyMike’s members receive 72 Shore Points on their birthday. That is enough for a regular sub, wrap or sub bowl.
The catch: You must have a MyMike’s account, opt in to email, add your birthday and purchase at least one regular or giant sub, wrap or sub bowl through your account during the previous 12 months.

Jimmy John’s: Free regular Original sandwich
Qualifying Jimmy John’s Rewards members receive a free regular-sized Original sandwich for their birthday.
The catch: You must be an active Jimmy John’s Rewards member, add your birth date to your account at least 14 days before your birthday and make at least one qualifying purchase during the previous six months.

Nothing Bundt Cakes: Free Bundtlet
Bundtastic Rewards members receive a free individual Bundtlet. The email or app offer generally arrives about a week before your birthday and stays valid through seven days after it.

Chipotle: Choose a free birthday extra
Chipotle Rewards members can choose guac, queso, chips or a fountain drink as their birthday reward. The redesigned 2026 program gives members a 30-day redemption window.
The catch: You need a Chipotle Rewards account. Check the reward in your app for any offer-specific limitations.

Portillo’s: Free slice of chocolate cake
Portillo’s Perks members receive a free regular slice of the famous chocolate cake during their birthday month.
And this one gets extra Chicago points: Perks members can also receive a free cake slice for their half birthday and their sign-up anniversary.

Crumbl: Free Single voucher for Silver members and above
Crumbl Rewards members at Silver, Gold or Pink status receive a free Single voucher for their birthday.
The catch: The birthday reward is not included at the default Bronze level. You must earn 500 Crumbs during the year to reach Silver status, so this one requires prior purchases rather than simply signing up before your birthday.

Cinnabon: Free small Cold Brew
Cinnabon Rewards members receive a free small Cold Brew for their birthday. The reward is valid in the app, online and in participating bakeries.
The catch: Join Cinnabon Rewards, add your birthday and use the reward within 14 days. Check the reward in your account before ordering because participation can vary by location.

Krispy Kreme: Sweet birthday reward
Krispy Kreme Rewards members receive a sweet birthday gift in their account. The brand does not publicly guarantee one specific item for every member, so check your app to see exactly what was loaded.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe: Surprise birthday reward
Tropic Rewards members receive a surprise birthday reward in their account. Because the brand does not promise one specific birthday item, check the app before you go.
The catch: You must join Tropic Rewards at least seven days before your birthday and add your birth date to your account. The reward appears on your birthday and must be used by the expiration date shown in the app.
Regal Cinemas: Free popcorn and drink
Free Regal Rewards members receive a small popcorn and small drink for their birthday. Paid Regal Unlimited members receive a large popcorn and drink.
The catch: You need a Regal account with your birthday added. Check the account for the reward and expiration date before going.

Free birthday beauty gifts
Sephora: Choice of Beauty Insider birthday gift
Beauty Insider members can choose one birthday gift during their birthday month. The 2026 options include rotating makeup, skincare, hair and fragrance gifts, with availability varying by location and membership tier.
The catch: No purchase is required when redeeming in a Sephora or Sephora at Kohl’s store. Sephora.com requires a merchandise purchase of at least $25. Kohls.com does not currently require a minimum purchase. Gifts are available while supplies last.

Ulta Beauty: Choice of birthday gift and 2X points
Ulta Beauty Rewards members can choose a free birthday gift and earn 2X points on qualifying purchases during their birthday month. Platinum and Diamond members also receive an extra $10 off.
The catch: Your birthday must be in your member profile and you must be opted in to marketing communications before your birthday month. The in-store gift requires the coupon from your email or app. Online redemption requires at least one qualifying merchandise purchase and is subject to availability.

Birthday shopping discounts and credits
Target: 5% off one future purchase
Target Circle members receive 5% off a future purchase. The reward loads on your birthday and is valid for 30 days.
The catch: Add your birth date to your free Target Circle account before your birthday. Restrictions apply, so read the offer in your Wallet before filling the cart.

Madewell: $25 off
Madewell Insiders receive $25 off for their birthday and $15 off for their half birthday.
The catch: Join the free Madewell Insider program and add your birthday to your account. Check the reward for current exclusions and expiration details.
Kendra Scott: 50% off one fashion-jewelry item
Kendra Scott Insiders receive 50% off one fashion-jewelry item and 25% off one fine, demi-fine or home item during their birthday month.
This is easily one of the highest-value birthday discounts on the list.
The catch: Join Kendra Scott Insider and add your birthday. Product and redemption exclusions can apply.

DSW: $5 or $10 birthday reward
DSW VIP Club and Gold members receive a $5 birthday reward. Elite members receive $10. The reward can be used during the birthday month.
The catch: Join DSW VIP and add your birthday.
Department store and major retailer birthday rewards
A few major retailers also offer birthday perks through their free loyalty programs. Some give a specific dollar amount, while others send a surprise discount that can vary from one member to another.
Nordstrom: Annual Nordy Club birthday perk
Nordy Club members receive an annual birthday perk that can be used once during their birthday month at Nordstrom.com, Nordstrom Rack stores or NordstromRack.com. The exact discount can vary, so check the offer in your account.
The catch: Add your birthday to your Nordy Club account at least 30 days before your birthday month and remain opted in to marketing emails. A minimum qualifying purchase of $10.01 is required, and the perk is not listed for use inside full-line Nordstrom stores.

Kohl’s: $5 in birthday Kohl’s Cash
Kohl’s Rewards members receive $5 in Kohl’s Cash on the first day of their birthday month.
The catch: Join Kohl’s Rewards, add your birthday and make at least one purchase before your birthday month. Check the Kohl’s Cash in your account for its redemption dates and exclusions.

JCPenney: $10 birthday CashPass for qualifying members
JCPenney Rewards members at the Insider, Elite and VIP tiers receive a $10 birthday CashPass. It can be used on an eligible purchase of $10 or more in stores or online.
The catch: The entry-level Member tier is not currently listed as receiving the birthday CashPass, so check your rewards status before counting on this one.

Macy’s: Star Rewards birthday surprise
Macy’s Star Rewards members receive a birthday surprise during their birthday month. The program is free to join at the Bronze level, but the value of the birthday offer can vary and a purchase may be required.
The catch: You must have made a Macy’s purchase through your membership within the previous 12 months, keep your current address on file and remain opted in to marketing mail. Macy’s also notes that you may need to visit a store to redeem the surprise.

Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic and Athleta: Birthday bonus
The free Encore rewards program covers Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic and Athleta. Core members receive an annual birthday gift, while higher tiers can also receive gifts for eligible family members. The exact offer varies.
The catch: Add your birthday to your Encore account at least seven business days before the first day of your birthday month. The birthday gift is selected by Gap Inc. and is not guaranteed to be the same every year.

What about Amazon, Walmart and Costco? I could not verify a standard birthday reward for regular customers or members, so I left them off this list. Target is included earlier because Target Circle currently publishes a 5% birthday discount.
Online boutique birthday discounts
You can use these fashion and boutique birthday rewards online, so you do not need to live near a store. Some offer a fixed discount, while others send a tier-based or surprise offer directly to your account.
Altar’d State: 25% off a full-price purchase
Stand Out Rewards members receive 25% off one entire full-price purchase during their birthday month. The code arrives by email on the first day of the month and works online or in a boutique.
The catch: Join Stand Out Rewards and add your birthday before your birthday month. The discount cannot be combined with another offer and does not apply to gift cards.

VICI: $10, $15 or $20 birthday treat
VICI Social Club members receive a birthday coupon based on their rewards tier. Trendsetter members with 100 to 249 points receive $10, Insider members with 250 to 499 points receive $15, and Icon members with 500 or more points receive $20.
The catch: The entry-level Friend tier does not receive a birthday coupon, so you must reach at least 100 points. Add your birthday, stay subscribed to marketing emails and use the coupon within seven days.
Show Me Your Mumu: Tier-based birthday discount
Qualifying Club Mumu members receive an annual birthday discount, with the percentage based on membership tier. The code arrives by email on your birthday and is valid for 30 days.
The catch: Add your birthday in the Club Mumu dashboard and make sure you qualify for an eligible tier. The brand does not publish one universal percentage because the offer varies by tier.

Tuckernuck: Birthday gift for VIP Rewards members
Tuckernuck lists a birthday gift as a benefit of its free VIP Rewards program. The brand does not publish one guaranteed value, so check the gift that appears in your account.

Pink Lily: Annual birthday offer
Pink Lily confirms that Pink Perks members receive a birthday offer every year. The exact discount and redemption window are not publicly fixed, so check the offer delivered to your account.

Anthropologie: AnthroPerks birthday bonus
AnthroPerks members receive a birthday bonus code by email about two weeks before their birthday. The code is valid for 45 days.
The catch: You must join AnthroPerks at least 16 days before your birthday, add your birth date and stay opted in to marketing emails. Anthropologie does not publish one fixed birthday discount for every member.

Francesca’s: Fran Club birthday present
Fran Club members can receive a birthday present through the boutique’s promotional emails or texts. The exact gift is not publicly guaranteed, so check the offer you receive before shopping.
The catch: Join the free Fran Club, provide your birthday and stay subscribed to promotional messages.
Chicago birthday freebies and discounts
Lettuce Entertain You: $15 or $20 dining reward
Frequent Diner Club members receive a birthday reward on the first day of their birthday month. Blue and Silver members get $15, and Gold members get $20. The reward is valid for 90 days and can be used toward a dining check without birthday-day restrictions.
The catch: You need at least one paid visit with a point accrual during the 12 months before your birthday. You must also use the prior year’s birthday reward before a new one will post.

Portillo’s: Free chocolate cake during your birthday month
This one deserves a second mention for my Chicago readers. Join Portillo’s Perks for a free regular slice of chocolate cake that can be redeemed any time during your birthday month.
Corner Bakery: Free birthday bakery sweet
Corner Bakery started in Chicago, so I am counting it as a local favorite even though it now has locations in other states. Free Green-tier members receive a bakery sweet on their birthday.
Birthday offers that are discounts, not true freebies
These can still be worth using, but I would not call them free birthday items:
- Dunkin’: Rewards members receive 3X points on purchases, not a free drink. You can activate the offer the day before, the day of or the day after your birthday. See Dunkin’ Rewards
- Dairy Queen: Eligible DQ Rewards members receive a personalized birthday offer, but DQ does not publicly promise the same free item to everyone. The reward is valid for seven days. See the DQ birthday FAQ
When should you sign up for birthday rewards?
My best advice is to sign up at least one month before your birthday. That gives the brand time to register your birth date, send any required email and count a qualifying purchase if the program requires one.
Some programs have very specific timing rules:
- Starbucks: Join at least seven days before your birthday and make a Star-earning purchase beforehand.
- Tropical Smoothie Cafe: Join at least seven days before your birthday.
- Jersey Mike’s: Make an eligible purchase during the 12 months before your birthday.
- Crumbl: Earn 500 Crumbs during the year to reach Silver status before your birthday.
- Lettuce Entertain You: Have a paid, point-earning visit during the 12 months before your birthday.
- Dairy Queen: Existing members need a $1 or greater order within 45 days before the birthday. New members can qualify by signing up and ordering within the day leading up to the birthday.
The birthday reward checklist
About one month before your birthday:
- Make sure your birthday is correct in every loyalty account.
- Turn on the brand’s required email or app notifications.
- Check whether you need to make a qualifying purchase.
- Look in both the app and your email during your birthday month.
- Screenshot or save each reward with its expiration date.
- Confirm that your preferred location participates before driving over.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a birthday freebie without signing up?
Usually, no. Most national brands require a free loyalty account with your birthday entered before the reward is issued. A restaurant or local business may choose to offer something in person, but it is not guaranteed unless it is part of the published program.
Do I have to use birthday rewards on my actual birthday?
It depends. A Green-level Starbucks reward is valid only on the actual birthday, while many other offers last seven days, 30 days or the entire birthday month. Always check the expiration date in your account.
Do birthday freebies require a purchase?
Some do. Sephora’s in-store birthday gift does not require a purchase, but Sephora.com requires a $25 merchandise purchase. Jersey Mike’s requires an eligible purchase during the previous 12 months to qualify. Some offers are discounts or add-ons that only work with a purchase.
Can I sign up on my birthday and still get the reward?
Sometimes, but it is risky. Dairy Queen has a path for new members who sign up and place a qualifying order within the day before the birthday, while Starbucks requires earlier enrollment.
Are birthday rewards the same at every location?
Not always. Many restaurants are franchised, and offers can be limited to participating locations. Beauty gift availability can also vary by store. Check your account and call the location if the reward is the only reason for your trip.

My conclusion after researching all of this: birthday freebies are absolutely worth it, but only if you do a little setup before your birthday month.
