Ahhh the smash cake! Leading up to Brody’s #1, I was literally dreaming about Brody devouring his smash cake! This kid loves to eat and will put anything in his mouth that you or I would BUT I’ve always fed him really healthy meals with minimal sugar. If I’m being honest, the only sugar he’s probably had in his lifetime {up until his first bday} was the natural sugar from fruit. Not that I’m opposed to my baby having sugar or dessert or ice cream or cookies – at all – but I just really wanted to see him try his first real sugary dessert for the first time during his smash cake photoshoot! Can you fault me for that??
IF MISSED: Take a look at the posts all about the PLANNING of Brody’s first birthday party and the DETAILS.
The photoshoot was scheduled with Jake Cohen Photography and I was shaking with excitement. So many people suggested that I get his smash cake from Mariano’s. Apparently their prices are right, their cake is delish, and I heard that they will literally do ANYTHING you want them to – perfect! After pinteresting and looking through 500,456 cakes, I found a photo online of what I wanted Brody’s to look like {see below!} and I printed it out {with my new printer, LOL} before taking it there. DONE. I couldn’t wait to pick it up on photoshoot day!
Okay, so now for my little 1-year-old’s smash cake outfit! I always faun over my friends little girls smash cake outfits but what the heck was a boy supposed to wear?? Well obviously I looked no further than my fave place to online shop: Etsy! Immediately I came across the cutest shop called SlickandBoogers and I knew I had to place an order ASAP! It’s literally a shop dedicated to making smash cake outfits and birthday hats. Let me just tell you, each outfit is to-die-for cuter than the next and if you want something specific, she can basically do anything you want with a custom order. It wasn’t easy deciding on the colors of his outfit but I finally figured it out, placed my order, and YOU GUYS, I kid you not, I got a Slick & Boogers box in the mail like 3 days later. I thought I was seeing things! I totally imagined that it would take at least a week, or longer, to receive, but nope, the shop owner, Diana, is amazing and sent it right away.
GUESS WHAT????? Diana is SO amazing that she is offering my readers *10% off any purchase over $10 in the shop with code iadore {all lowercase}*. Thank you for being so generous, Diana!! Again, click HERE for the link to her Etsy shop. Any readers with babies turning 1 soon, take advantage of this incredible offer, and share with friends, too! You will be so happy you did when you look back at your baby’s smash cake photos. These are the memories that last for a lifetime :)
Ok so are you ready for a story? We got the smash cake from Mariano’s, it looked beautiful, and then we had B’s photoshoot. HE LOVED IT! Duh, I knew he would! And he was absolutely hilarious throughout the whole shoot. REMINDER: this was his first time eating cake! We were dying watching him cram each bite into his cute little mouth. It was HILARIOUS.
After the shoot, we were in the ‘burbs so we went to my parents house. Brody took a nap in the crib and he slept awhile but woke up coughing up a storm. We ran up there and OMG he threw up everywhere!!!!!!!!!! ALL BLUE!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh, I felt so bad for the little man and then I realized that he probably had so much sugar so quickly, had never really eaten anything like that before, and it messed with his poor little system. Afterwards though, he felt a lot better and was back to acting like his normal self. Thank goodness!
I learned a major parent lesson that day: don’t feed a baby so much of something in one sitting when he/she is not used to it. Thinking about Brody’s actual party, I knew he would be smashing a cake but I was a little nervous that the same thing was going to happen. So, what’s a mom to do? Make the cake!!! I found a very healthy recipe {that I can also vouch for tasting delicious} via Pinterest that only consisted of whole food ingredients {mostly bananas and unsweetened apple sauce} and I actually made the cake! Obviously I’m not profesh, and had no idea how to make it look pretty so sprinkles to the rescue!
Brody didn’t like it at all… HA! KIDDING! He actually ate about half. LOVED IT! Not a bone in my body was worried though that he would get sick this time! And I was really happy that I decided to make it myself with real ingredients that I knew would agree with B’s little tummy. SUCCESS! Just look at these pics:
